Warlick Academy

Warlick Academy is a small public school in Gastonia, North Carolina, serving just 175 students in grades 6 through 12 as part of Gaston County Schools. Unlike the surrounding traditional high schools, which typically enroll 900 to 1,400 students, Warlick Academy's unusual grade span and very small size suggest it serves a specialized, nontraditional role within the district. Nearly all of its students—98.3%—come from low-income households and qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

Academically, the school's results are deeply concerning. Proficiency rates in math, reading, and science sit in the single digits to low teens, running roughly 40 to 55 percentage points below district and state averages. The four-year graduation rate for 2025-2026 is just 23.9%, compared to the district average of 90.0%. Every nearby traditional high school graduates at least 88% of its students, with South Point High at 94.6% and Hunter Huss High near 90%. Chronic absenteeism affects 61.5% of Warlick Academy students versus roughly 23–24% district and state averages, and it is nearly four times higher than South Point's 15.7% rate.

What makes these outcomes particularly striking is the school's resource level. Warlick Academy spends about $18,900 per student—more than double the spending at nearby schools like Ashbrook High—and maintains a low 10.9 student-teacher ratio. Yet its academic and graduation outcomes are the weakest in the region. Nearby schools with equally high poverty levels, such as Ashbrook High at roughly 99.8% free/reduced lunch, still graduate about 89% of students, showing that high poverty alone does not explain these results. Warlick Academy has ranked in the bottom few percent of North Carolina high schools for over a decade, with no sustained improvement. Its special education students are the only subgroup performing above the bottom 1% statewide, ranking at the 26th percentile.
