Gaston Early College of Medical Sciences

Gaston Early College of Medical Sciences is a small early-college high school in Dallas, NC, serving 174 students in grades 9–12 as part of Gaston County Schools, a district that ranks in the lower half statewide. Despite the district's overall standing, GECMS is one of the very highest-performing high schools in North Carolina, currently ranked #7 out of 662 schools in the 99th percentile. The school has earned a 5-star rating every year and has never dropped below #23 statewide since 2021.

The school's most striking metric is its End-of-Course proficiency: 100% of students scored proficient in Biology, English II, Math I, and Math III in the most recent year — outpacing the state by 35 to 55 percentage points. The contrast with nearby schools is stark. North Gaston High, the closest traditional high school, ranks #519 statewide with biology proficiency of 44.7% and chronic absenteeism of 31.5%. GECMS is also part of a remarkable cluster of high-achieving schools in the county: it sits essentially next door to Gaston Early College High School (ranked #2), and both post near-perfect proficiency rates even though GECMS serves a higher percentage of economically disadvantaged students. Highland School of Technology (ranked #5) achieves similar results with a lower student-teacher ratio (13.8 vs. 21.8) and a more affluent student body, making GECMS's outcomes all the more striking.
