Hunter Huss High

Hunter Huss High is a large public high school in Gastonia, NC, serving about 1,165 students in grades 9–12 as part of Gaston County Schools. Its academic performance ranks 593rd out of 662 North Carolina high schools (10th percentile), with End-of-Course proficiency rates far below district and state averages in every subject. Only 27.1% of students score proficient in Math III, compared with 57.4% for the district and 68.9% statewide, and English II proficiency (30.0%) is the lowest among area comprehensive high schools — trailing East Gaston High (60.5%), Stuart W Cramer High (62.8%), and Forestview High (58.5%).

Poverty alone does not explain the results. Hunter Huss serves an almost entirely low-income population (99.7% free/reduced lunch), but so do most Gaston County high schools, and several — including Forestview High, Ashbrook High, and North Gaston High — post considerably higher test scores. Chronic absenteeism looks like a more central issue: 36.0% of Hunter Huss students were chronically absent in 2024–2025, compared with 23.2% of students districtwide. Subgroup results reinforce that the challenge is schoolwide — special education outcomes rank in the 2nd percentile statewide, and even the strongest subgroup results, English Language Learners at the 21st percentile, fall well below the state midpoint.

The clearest strength is graduation. Hunter Huss's graduation rate has climbed from 79.0% in 2021–2022 to about 90%, nearly matching the district average (90.0%) and slightly above the statewide average (88.8%). The tension is that many graduates leave without grade-level proficiency in core subjects. In other words, the school has made real progress in keeping students through completion, but chronic absenteeism, low test scores, and wide gaps in academic readiness remain the most important considerations for families assessing the school.
