Summary

East Gaston High is a traditional public high school in Mount Holly, North Carolina, serving 917 students in grades 9–12 as part of Gaston County Schools. The school’s clearest strengths are graduation and attendance: 94.3% of students graduate on time, a rate that has run several points above the Gaston County (90.0%) and state (88.8%) averages for years, and only South Point High (94.6%) matches it nearby. Chronic absenteeism, at 21.8%, is also better than the county average (23.2%) and far below such peers as Ashbrook High (39.2%), North Gaston High (31.5%), and West Mecklenburg High School (31.3%).

Academically, East Gaston is a more mixed story. The school ranks in the 41st percentile statewide (2 stars), well below its 4-star standing from 2018–2019 but a modest improvement over the prior year. On state End-of-Course exams, the bright spot is Math I, where 53.8% of students score proficient—about 11 points above the state average. Math III is the opposite: proficiency runs about 14 points below the state average. Biology and English II also trail the state, though English II is a few points above the Gaston County average. Because subject scores fell sharply in 2024–2025 before rebounding in 2025–2026, single-year results should be read cautiously.

One distinctive finding is the school’s unusually strong record with English Learner students: East Gaston now ranks in the 76th percentile statewide in that subgroup, up from the 44th percentile just two years earlier. Looking at the wider local picture, East Gaston sits in the middle of a competitive cluster: it clearly outperforms Ashbrook and North Gaston on overall rank, graduation, and attendance, but Stuart W Cramer High has moved ahead of it in recent years, and South Point High remains the leading traditional high school in the area. For parents, the takeaway is a school that reliably gets students to graduation and to class, with average test proficiency and strong support for some of its most vulnerable learners.
