Summary

Snowden International High School is a small, citywide high school serving 421 students in grades 9–12 at 150 Newbury Street in Boston's Back Bay, part of the Boston school district.

Snowden's state ranking has been consistently low for a decade: in ten reported years it has never ranked above the 18th percentile among Massachusetts high schools. In 2025–26 it placed 340th of 353 schools (4th percentile), giving back most of the previous year's 15th-percentile result and making it the lowest-ranked Boston district school in this comparison set. On 2025–26 10th-grade MCAS, 10.98% of students were proficient in English language arts and 9.86% in math, compared with 32.74% and 33.27% district-wide and 45.48% and 43.73% statewide; science was reported at 0% and physics at 1.49%. ELA proficiency fell 18.9 points in a single year and math 14.3 points — roughly 2.5–3 times the district's decline over the same period.

Graduation is the clear bright spot: 85.6% of students graduate, above the district's 81.3%, and the 6.7% dropout rate beats the district's 8.8%. The concern is the gap between that and proficiency — about one in ten students demonstrates grade-level mastery in ELA and math in the same year 85.6% earn a diploma. Inputs don't appear to be the constraint: Snowden has 11.1 students per teacher and spends $25,418 per pupil, more than Boston Latin School ($21,850) and O'Bryant School of Math & Science ($23,107), which post 84.85% and 64.39% math proficiency with larger classes; Fenway High School and Quincy Upper School also outperform it nearby. Meanwhile, English language learner students went from a relative strength — top-third state rankings two years running — to last among 105 ranked schools, and nearly every student group fell 20 or more percentile points in one year.
