Summary

Dever Elementary School is a public elementary school located in Dorchester, MA, serving grades PK-6 with a total enrollment of 406 students. The school is part of the Boston Public School District, which is ranked 298 out of 348 districts in Massachusetts and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Dever Elementary School has consistently ranked in the bottom 20% of Massachusetts elementary schools for the past 10 years, indicating a long-standing struggle with academic achievement. The school's performance on MCAS assessments is significantly below state and district averages, with only 15.21% of Dever students proficient or better in ELA in 2024-2025, compared to 41.53% statewide and 29.27% in Boston. Despite the school's relatively low student-teacher ratio and higher per-student spending compared to nearby schools, such as Condon K-8 School, Mason Elementary School, and Clap Elementary School, Dever's academic performance remains significantly below the state and district averages.

The school faces unique challenges in supporting its vulnerable student populations, with 100% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch and a majority of African American (57%) and Hispanic (39%) students. Targeted strategies and resources may be needed to address the specific needs of these student groups and close the achievement gaps. One notable exception in the area is Perry Elementary School, which outperforms Dever Elementary and the other nearby schools significantly, with a majority of students meeting or exceeding proficiency standards on MCAS assessments. The comparison to the nearby schools highlights the need for a deeper understanding of the specific challenges and factors contributing to the persistent low performance at Dever Elementary School, as well as the potential for learning from the successes of higher-performing schools in the same district.

Open Quote The school has no clue how to deal with students with disabilities. Do Not enroll your child here!!! The only family engagement from this school is when they start calling your every day to report your disabled child is too much for them and they will not follow the IEP!!!! Close Quote
