Stamford Charter School for Excellence, serving a similar share of low-income students (55.6% FRPL), ranks in the 70th percentile with 5th-grade ELA proficiency nearly three times higher than Stark's. Meanwhile, Hindley Elementary School and Holmes Elementary School in Darien, less than two miles away, post proficiency rates of 70–90% — though they serve almost no low-income students. Stark's ranking has slipped from the 43rd percentile in 2020–21 to the 16th percentile today, even as attendance improved. The school's strong attendance and reasonable resources are not translating into academic outcomes, and the most urgent opportunities for improvement lie in early literacy, math instruction, and better serving low-income and male students.
