Holmes Elementary School is a K-5 school in Darien, CT, serving 407 students within the Darien School District. Academically, Holmes students dramatically outperform state averages on SBAC and NGSS assessments. For example, 3rd grade math proficiency was 91.2% in 2025–2026 versus the state average of 52.2%. The gap with nearby Stamford schools is especially striking: Holmes’s 4th grade ELA proficiency was 84.5%, compared to just 8.1% at the closest neighbor, Toquam Magnet School, and 24.5% at Julia A. Stark School. These differences reflect very different socioeconomic contexts between the Stamford School District and Darien, but they also illustrate how much geography alone does not predict performance in this part of Connecticut.

Within Darien, Holmes is no longer the top elementary school. Royle Elementary School now ranks #9 statewide, while Holmes sits at #41 and Hindley Elementary School at #45. The most notable area of concern is 5th grade math, which dropped to 68.4% proficiency in 2025–2026, below the Darien district average of 80.3% and behind both Royle (79.4%) and Hindley (85.7%). Holmes also has a higher student–teacher ratio (13.7) and lower per-student spending than its Darien peers. Still, the school continues to excel in early-grade foundations, especially 3rd grade math, and serves female students particularly well. While the recent dip in 5th grade results is worth monitoring, Holmes remains an elite, top-10% school with a long track record of strong outcomes.
