Summary

Marie L. Greenwood Academy is a PK-8 school in Denver's 80239 area serving 597 students, and it is one of only a few nearby schools—along with Farrell B. Howell ECE-8 and McGlone Academy—that serves students all the way through 8th grade. The school operates within School District No. 1 and serves a high-poverty population, with 88.4% of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch in 2024-25.

Academically, the school remains in the bottom decile of Colorado schools, ranking 853rd out of 943 in 2025-26 with a 0-star rating. Its ELA proficiency is 25.4% and math proficiency is 18.2%, well below district and state averages. However, the school is not the weakest option in its neighborhood: it ranks third in both ELA and math among nearby ranked schools, and it substantially outperforms McGlone Academy, Maxwell Elementary, Farrell B. Howell ECE-8, and Oakland Elementary. There are also signs of real momentum. Math proficiency has more than doubled in two years, from 8.2% in 2023-24 to 18.2% in 2025-26, and the school's state percentile has climbed from the 1st percentile in 2018-19 to the 10th percentile today.

The most encouraging news is in attendance and the upper grades. Chronic absenteeism dropped sharply from 47.9% in 2023-24 to 31.7% in 2024-25—an especially notable improvement given that district and state absenteeism both rose during the same period. At 31.7%, the school is now the second-lowest among nearby schools, ahead of Academy 360 (64.6%), McGlone Academy (51.9%), and Escalante-Biggs Academy (51.3%). The 8th grade math proficiency rate of 32.9% approaches district and state levels, and far exceeds the 6-12% rates at the other two nearby PK-8 schools. The English Learner subgroup also earned a 3-star rating. With its PK-8 structure providing stability and 8th grade results outperforming its PK-8 neighbors, Marie L. Greenwood Academy has a credible path forward if it can extend its upper-grade success to the lower grades and continue improving attendance.
