Summary

La Pluma Elementary is a K-5 public school serving 284 students in the Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District, performing around the state average academically with notable strengths in supporting specific student groups.

The school's performance is generally stable, with recent test scores in English and Math close to state averages, though science scores are slightly lower. A key strength is its exceptional support for vulnerable populations, such as homeless students, where it has historically achieved outstanding results. The school has also made significant progress in improving student attendance. However, there is an unusual and consistent achievement gap, with male students outperforming female students, and performance varies by grade, with upper-grade math being a particular area for attention.

Compared to nearby schools, La Pluma is a solid, middle-performing school. It achieves similar or better results than some neighbors, like Foster Road Elementary, while using fewer resources per student. However, other schools with similar student demographics, such as Gardenhill Elementary in the same district, achieve significantly higher proficiency rates, demonstrating what is possible. This suggests La Pluma has a strong foundation but also clear opportunities to learn from higher-performing peers to benefit all students.
