Summary

John Foster Dulles Elementary is a public K-5 school serving about 250 students in La Mirada, part of the Norwalk-La Mirada Unified School District, with a consistent average rating and a student body where over half qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

This school has a distinct academic profile, showing a particular strength in science where its students outperform both the district and state averages, rivaling even some higher-performing neighbors like Gardenhill Elementary. While its math and English scores are around the state average, students show strong growth between grades. Historically, the school has been very effective in supporting vulnerable student groups, though recent data shows a dip in performance for some of these subgroups. A notable challenge is chronic absenteeism, which at 17.6% is higher than at top local schools such as Leffingwell Elementary (6.7%) and Meadow Green Elementary (8.4%).

An interesting point for parents is that Dulles spends significantly more per student than most nearby schools, yet its overall academic results are in the middle range compared to local options. It holds its own, especially in science, against schools in higher-ranked districts like East Whittier City Elementary and Lowell Joint. The school's smaller size does not automatically translate to higher test scores, and its recent performance trends suggest it is working to address new challenges in the post-pandemic era while building on its core strengths.

Open Quote If I could the school zero stars I would. My nephew is a special needs student that goes there and the school has anything but cooperative. This school is a poor excuse for a school. Put your students first regardless of he condition they are in. Close Quote
