Summary:

ZIP code 90638 has 10 schools—six elementary, two middle and two high schools—all in Norwalk-La Mirada Unified, serving students from elementary grades through high school. The 2025–2026 school averages were slightly above state results in ELA, math and science, but performance differs considerably from one school to another. The most important finding for families is that the specific school and grade matter more than the area-wide average.

Arlie F. Hutchinson Middle led the middle schools in all three subjects, with 67% in ELA, 51% in math and 53% in science—10, 15 and 14 percentage points above Reginald M. Benton Middle. Gardenhill Elementary led elementary schools in ELA and math; Escalona Elementary and Eastwood Elementary tied for the science lead. At the low end, El Camino High (Continuation) scored 7% in ELA, 23% in math and 6% in science; its graduation rate was 68%, compared with 96% at La Mirada High. La Mirada’s scores were higher by 54 points in ELA, 14 in math and 39 in science. El Camino’s continuation-school setting is important context for that comparison.

Across the 10 schools, average scores rose from 2024–2025 to 2025–2026 by about 1 percentage point in ELA, 1 point in math and 6 points in science, but individual results varied: Foster Road Elementary gained 7 points in ELA, 17 in math and 20 in science, while John Foster Dulles Elementary fell by 8, 5 and 7 points. SchoolDigger’s statewide percentile ranking rose 17 points for El Camino and 10 for Foster Road between 2023–2024 and 2025–2026, while Dulles fell 15 points. Ratios also do not neatly track results: Hutchinson’s was 22.0 students per teacher versus Benton’s 25.3, while Gardenhill’s was 24.6 compared with Dulles’s 22.6. Comparisons are most useful within the same school level, since schools serve different grades.
