Summary

Mountain View High is a large, top-performing public high school serving about 2,187 students in grades 9-12 within the affluent Silicon Valley community of Mountain View, California, as part of the Mountain View-Los Altos Union High district.

The school consistently ranks in the top 3-4% of all California high schools, with students achieving proficiency rates far above state averages—over 80% in English and nearly 70% in Math and Science. It shows remarkable strength in supporting students with special needs and multi-racial students, ranking in the 97th-98th percentiles for these groups. Compared to its district peer, Los Altos High, Mountain View High maintains higher science proficiency and lower chronic absenteeism. It also delivers these excellent outcomes efficiently, with a better student-teacher ratio than some other top local schools like Monta Vista High and Cupertino High.

Despite its overall excellence, the school faces significant challenges in serving its most vulnerable populations, with rankings for English Learners, Hispanic students, and students from low socioeconomic backgrounds having declined recently. The contrast with nearby alternative schools, like Alta Vista High in the same district, is stark, highlighting the different student populations and challenges each model serves. Parents should know that while Mountain View High is an exceptionally strong and resilient school, it has clear areas for growth in educational equity.

Open Quote I am a student at Mountain View High School, and can confidently say that I am so glad I go here. The teachers are so dedicated and caring towards the education and well-being of their students. The students are so welcoming and kind. I've never seen or heard of any issues of bullying, fighting, etc. MVHS has such a positive vibe all around. Although our academics require hard work, our curriculum and teachers are understanding and allow for students to make amendments to schedules if necessary. I honestly love coming to school and seeing all of my classmates everyday. Lastly, we may not be known as the most spirited school in the area, but that is steadily improving! Students are heavily involved in sports, arts, academics, and other social events! Close Quote
