Summary

Monta Loma Elementary is a K-5 public school serving 298 students in the Mountain View Whisman School District, located in a high-performing region of Silicon Valley where it maintains a solid, average statewide ranking.

Academically, Monta Loma Elementary performs near or slightly above state averages in core subjects but consistently scores below its own district's averages, creating a notable performance gap within the same small area. For example, while Monta Loma ranks in the 68th percentile, nearby Stevenson Elementary in the same district ranks in the top 2% statewide. The school shows significant variation in performance between grade levels and student subgroups, and it maintains a lower student-teacher ratio and higher per-student spending than many comparable schools, including some higher-performing ones.

The school serves a socioeconomically mixed population and has made recent progress in reducing chronic absenteeism post-pandemic. Its position highlights the extreme educational disparities in the region, as it is geographically close to some of California's highest-ranked schools like Herbert Hoover Elementary and Bullis Charter, which achieve exceptional results with different resource levels.

Open Quote Monta Loma is a diverse community with an inclusive culture and a dedicated set of teachers and staff. Over the past 7 yrs I have witnessed the school community grow, improve and adapt to many changes, all for the best. New construction is finishing up to complement the academic and social changes being implemented to ensure each student receives what they need to succeed. Close Quote

Open Quote I have been overwhelmingly impressed with this lovely neighborhood school for the last 3 years. I have a 2nd grader and Kindergartener who each have their own unique style of learning and the Differentiated Instruction they receive at Monta Loma has truly helped foster their love of learning. The community is diverse and though parental-involvement could be better, it is such a warm, nurturing environment for the students/families alike. Principal Lyon is hands-on (and a former educator!) who makes an earnest effort to communicate with parents about both the successes and challenges the school faces. She's very approachable and really listens. I've loved every one of the teachers my girls have had and my girls have thrived both in the classroom and out while on the Monta Loma campus. My professional background is in private school education administration so I feel I can speak to the depth and breadth of the capabilities and talents Monta Loma teachers bring to the table. They are some of the hardest-working, committed & nurturing educators I have ever experienced and definitely well-deserving of the California Distinguished School award that was bestowed in 2014. The enrichment opportunities are endless as well - choir, band, gardening, art, physical education, chess, Lego robotics and student leadership to name a few. I look forward to many more years of involvement at Monta Loma Elementary. Close Quote
