Summary

Jose Antonio Vargas Elementary is a public K-5 school serving 368 students in the Mountain View Whisman School District, consistently earning a 4-star rating and performing above California state averages in all core subjects.

The school stands out for its exceptionally low and improving chronic absenteeism rate of 6.4%, which is better than both the district and state averages and rivals the attendance at top-performing local schools like Stevenson Elementary and Amy Imai Elementary. It achieves solid academic results while spending less per student than several neighboring schools, such as Benjamin Bubb Elementary and Mariano Castro Elementary, indicating efficient use of resources. However, performance varies significantly among different student groups, with notable recent declines for students from low socioeconomic backgrounds.

An interesting finding is the dramatic range in school performance within a very small area; while Stevenson and Amy Imai are among the state's top performers, others like Mariano Castro Elementary and Vargas Elementary in the neighboring Sunnyvale district face greater challenges. For improvement, Jose Antonio Vargas could focus on strategies to support all student subgroups equitably and learn from higher-performing schools with similar resource levels in the district.

Open Quote Brand new school with an engaged PTA, beautiful athletic field, and extracurricular activities. Classrooms are modern with large screens for teaching, and every kid gets a chrome-book laptop for learning. We have 2 kids enrolled and they like it. Pros: Enthusiastic principal and responsive staff and faculty. The PTA is engaged and organizes good events like an International Festival, Book Fairs, and Walkathons. The school is diverse. Areas for possible improvement: Some teachers partner with student teachers who teach class once per week. Some of the more advanced kids are grouped for independent study, at times, while teachers focus their time on other students. The iReady online curriculum is used heavily and takes some getting used to for kids. Close Quote
