As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Burleigh Elementary is a large school with over 700 students. The curriculum for early education (5k-kindergarten) is extremely disjointed and does not meet the expectations of parents who wish for a cohesive, robust, and effective education for their young children. Particularly, the kindergarten (5k) full-day program is extremely disappointing. The language arts program for kindergarten is a whole language approach which has been proved to be ineffective. There is an expectation that children come into the 5K classroom ready to read, however, there is very little emphasis on phonics to help children decode words and have the tools to help them read and build on their reading skills. Invented spelling (without correction), very little emphasis on vowels, handwriting without lined paper (which helps children learn proportion of letter sizes) are all some of the examples of the flawed language arts curriculum. The math curriculum for 5K is basically non-existent. Everyday Math is the primary program used for mathematics, however the program is flawed and needs to be supplemented (especially at the 5K level) so concrete number concepts are taught. Needless to say, the math supplements used are not satisfactory. In 5k, there is little thought to helping children at an individual level, and a station/grouped concept with little adult intervention (despite parents best attempts to help in the classroom) to help children stay on-task and engaged is overused. One of the lead kindergarten teachers, Mrs. Hillig, is extremely disorganized, is lacking in expertise and professionalism in communication to parents on how to help their children in the classroom, and has expectations of students which outweigh their social and academic abilities at a kindergarten level without strong leadership and a willing mentor. If you have a child ready to enter kindergarten, you should look at all your options before enrolling them at Burleigh Elementary. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
