Tonawanda Elementary

Summary:

Tonawanda Elementary is a public elementary school in Elm Grove, Wisconsin, serving 525 students in grades PK-5 and part of the highly-ranked Elmbrook School District. This top-performing school has consistently ranked within the top 40 elementary schools in Wisconsin, earning a 5-star rating from SchoolDigger in the 2022-2023 school year.

Tonawanda Elementary's students consistently outperform their peers at the district and state levels on standardized assessments, with proficiency rates significantly higher than the Elmbrook School District and Wisconsin averages. However, the school's student population is relatively homogeneous, with a majority of students identifying as White and a low percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high socioeconomic status. This raises questions about equity and access to educational opportunities for students of color and those from lower-income families in the area.

Compared to nearby schools in the Wauwatosa School District and West Allis-West Milwaukee School District, Tonawanda Elementary's performance is consistently higher, particularly in academic proficiency. The school also maintains a low chronic absenteeism rate, a positive indicator of student engagement and attendance. These factors contribute to Tonawanda Elementary's reputation as an exceptional educational institution, though the district and community should consider addressing the issues of equity and accessibility to ensure that all students have the opportunity to succeed.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I loved Tonawanda. Went there K4 through 5th grade and absolutely was an AMAZING school, with wonderful staff. All my teachers were beyond wonderful and I liked every one of them, even the teachers I didn't have, but got to talk to. Been 3 years, but I'm hoping to see one of the teachers I had and say hi. It's a wonderful school and although it is such a small community compared to the other elementary schools, you get to know everyone basically. Just a big family, had a great time there. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
