Mount Tahoma High School is a public Tacoma, Washington, high school serving about 1,410 students in grades 9–12 through the Tacoma School District. The school serves a relatively high-need community, with 69.65% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch. Its 21.3:1 student-teacher ratio is higher than at several nearby schools. Mount Tahoma’s statewide standing has improved from the 2nd percentile in 2020–21 to the 13th percentile in 2025–26, although it remains in the lower range.

Academic achievement is the school’s biggest challenge, especially in math. In 2025–26, proficiency was 41.45% in English language arts, 15.10% in math, and 27.41% in science, all below Washington averages. Math has improved gradually from 10.69% in 2022–23 but remains a persistent weakness. Science also declined after improving through 2024–25. Compared with similar schools, Mount Tahoma outperformed Foss High School and Clover Park High School in all three tested subjects, but trailed Industrial Design Engineering and Arts, General William H. Harrison Preparatory School, and Curtis Senior High by substantial margins.

Graduation is a relative strength: Mount Tahoma’s 2024–25 rate was 86.3%, above Washington’s 82.6% but below the district’s 91.4%. However, its 10.6% dropout rate was higher than the district and state rates and above the rates at Foss and Clover Park. The school’s priorities are to strengthen math instruction, rebuild science performance, reduce student departures, and provide more targeted support for groups with low effectiveness results, including homeless students, African American students, and students receiving special education services. Nearby Harrison Preparatory and Industrial Design Engineering and Arts may offer useful local examples of stronger academic and support practices, though their student populations and programs differ.
