Summary

North Central High School is a large public school serving grades 6-12 in the Spokane School District, with an enrollment of over 1,600 students and a strong commitment to supporting a high-need community.

The school presents a fascinating picture of both notable strengths and clear challenges. Its middle school program is exceptionally strong, with student proficiency in core subjects far exceeding district and state averages. However, this high performance drops significantly in the high school grades, particularly in math and science, indicating a crucial transition that the school is working to improve. Despite these academic fluctuations, North Central excels at helping students graduate, consistently maintaining a rate above 90%—outperforming the state average—and has a lower dropout rate. The school shows particular effectiveness in supporting Hispanic and homeless students.

When compared to nearby schools like Lewis & Clark High School, which serves a less economically disadvantaged population and has higher test scores, North Central's ability to achieve strong graduation rates with its student body is noteworthy. It operates with similar per-student funding and a slightly better student-teacher ratio than Lewis & Clark. Unlike the many smaller, specialized alternative schools in the area, such as Lumen High School or the various Open Doors programs, North Central provides comprehensive services to a broad, large population, playing a vital role in the district.

Open Quote I attended north central all 4 years of my high school career. I was the athletic, preppy, get along with everyone student. i took ap classes and honors classes through all 4 years. it was and will always be a great school. it might seem "ghetto" because of the neighborhood, but i ensure you it is one of the best schools in the greater spokane area. it offers great academic programs and options for students. the sports department is lacking but its still fair. give nc a shot. i did.
