Summary

Audubon Elementary is a public Pre-K through 5th grade school in the Spokane School District, serving 398 students in a community with significant economic need, where 85% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

Academically, the school faces considerable challenges, with student proficiency in English Language Arts (26.4%) and Math (22.8%) well below district and state averages, resulting in a state ranking in the bottom 10% of elementary schools. This performance has been consistently low for nearly a decade. Interestingly, science is a relative strength, with proficiency rates higher than some nearby schools like Willard Elementary and Holmes Elementary. The school has a low student-teacher ratio of about 12-to-1 and receives over $22,800 in funding per student, which is higher than most area schools.

When compared to its neighbors, Audubon's situation presents a puzzle. It receives more funding per student than higher-performing schools like Finch Elementary and Browne Elementary, yet their academic results are stronger. Similarly, Spokane Public Montessori, less than a mile away, achieves much better results with significantly less funding per student, highlighting that resources alone do not determine outcomes. The wide range of performance among nearby schools, from Logan Elementary to Finch, suggests that school-level practices are a major factor in student success.

Open Quote My daughter really loves attending Audubon. She isn't bullied and the teachers all seem to know the kids. This is the first year she doesnt argue with us about going to school or make up being sick because of the lack of attention that they were paying to the bullying situation at her last school that i shall leave undisclosed. Open Quote My son attended Kindergarten and First Grade here and he really enjoyed his experience. The principal and the staff really care about the students and spent time problem solving with us and making sure every one was working toward the same clear goals. The PTA works really hard to provide good experiences for the kids and their families, but could really use some extra familial support, as that is not a strong area here. I was never concerned about the safety or security of my son while he attended, the school contact was prompt when he had an accidental injury. They also called to check in very early in the day when he was accidentally marked absent and they had not been notified of an absence. Overall I would recommend this school. Close Quote
