Summary

Mead Learning Options is a K–12 alternative school in Spokane, serving about 790 students in an area supported by the relatively strong Mead School District. The district ranks 51st of 238 Washington districts and is at the 79th percentile statewide. Mead is one of the largest schools in this alternative-school comparison, and its 34.94% free- or reduced-price lunch rate is lower than that of most nearby alternatives.

Academically, the school has a mixed but generally competitive profile. In 2025–26, 56.69% of students were proficient in English language arts, above the Washington average of 52.81%, while math proficiency was 38.95%, below both the state’s 43.11% and the district’s 49.65%. Science is the clearest strength: 59.05% were proficient, exceeding both the state and district. Compared with nearby schools with reported results, Mead ranked second in ELA behind Bryant Center, and third in both math and science. Its strongest grade-specific result was eighth-grade science at 69.05%. Areas needing attention include fifth-grade math at 18.60%, tenth-grade math at 28.36%, and third-grade ELA at 36.11%.

Graduation results are less reassuring. Mead’s graduation rate fell from 89.0% in 2023–24 to 76.9% in 2024–25, compared with 89.9% for the Mead School District and 82.6% statewide. Its 7.6% dropout rate was better than Washington’s 9.8% but higher than the district’s 3.7%. The student-teacher ratio has also risen from 25.9:1 to 29.6:1 over three years, while ELA and math results have weakened. Mead’s results are stronger than most nearby alternative programs, but comparisons should account for differences in size and instructional model; for example, Spokane International Academy reports a much lower student-teacher ratio, while Bryant Center posts higher scores in all three tested subjects.
