Summary

Olympic Middle School serves 956 students in grades 6–8 in Auburn, Washington, and is one of the larger middle schools in the Auburn School District. The school serves a relatively high-need student population, with 67.99% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch in 2024–2025. Olympic is near Mt Baker Middle School, Cascade Middle School, and Rainier Middle School. Its student-teacher ratio was 17.1:1, the lowest among those three nearby Auburn schools, although its per-student spending was slightly below theirs.

Academically, Olympic ranked 446th of 514 Washington middle schools for 2025–2026, placing it in the 13th percentile statewide and below all three nearby Auburn middle schools. Proficiency was 30.45% in English Language Arts, 21.09% in math, and 29.85% in science. These results were below both district and state averages, with math the weakest subject overall. Olympic’s ELA performance was also the lowest among the four Auburn schools: Mt Baker Middle School posted 45.98%, Cascade Middle School 39.28%, and Rainier Middle School 36.89%. Olympic was slightly ahead of Cascade in math and science, however. Mt Baker is the clearest same-district benchmark, outperforming Olympic in every subject despite having a higher student-teacher ratio.

The recent picture is mixed rather than uniformly negative. Math improved from 16.63% proficiency in 2023–2024 to 21.09% in 2025–2026, while science rose from 18.31% to 29.85% over the same period. ELA fluctuated and declined from 35.78% to 30.45% in the latest year. Olympic also compares favorably with some other higher-need schools, including Canyon Ridge Middle School, which reported lower proficiency in all three subjects. At the other end of the local range, North Tapps Middle School, Federal Way Public Academy, and Edgemont Junior High posted substantially higher results, though they differ in enrollment, grade span, district, and student needs. Overall, Olympic shows encouraging science and math progress but has persistent achievement gaps, especially in math and ELA.
