Unity Braxton Middle School in Manassas, VA, serves 1,055 students in grades 6-8 as part of Prince William County Public Schools. The school ranks in the bottom 11 percent of Virginia middle schools (369th out of 416) and carries a 1-star rating. Over the past decade, the school has consistently ranked between the 5th and 16th percentile statewide.

The biggest challenge is grade-level proficiency. Reading tells a similar story, with rates 20 to 25 points behind the rest of the county. The school has real bright spots: 100 percent of students in 8th grade Geometry and 7th grade Algebra I scored proficient, and 8th grade Algebra I hit 96 percent. Civics and Economics also stood out at 82 percent proficient, matching the district and well above the state average. In other words, accelerated learners are thriving even as many students at grade level are struggling.

Compared to nearby Prince William County middle schools, Unity Braxton Middle is an outlier. Bull Run Middle, Gainesville Middle, and E.H. Marsteller Middle all rank in the 70th to 90th percentile with much lower poverty rates. More telling is Parkside Middle, just 2.6 miles away with an almost identical poverty rate (69 percent). Parkside ranks in the 33rd percentile and outperforms Unity Braxton on nearly every grade-level test — 57 percent of its 6th graders passed math versus 37 percent at Unity Braxton. On a positive note, chronic absenteeism has dropped dramatically from 28 percent to 14 percent over three years, matching the district average. Unity Braxton also invests more than its peers, with a 13.2 student-teacher ratio and higher per-student spending, but those resources have not yet closed the achievement gap.
