Summary

Liberty Middle is a grades 7–8 school in Clifton, Virginia, enrolling 913 students as part of Fairfax County Public Schools. The school currently ranks in the 66th percentile of Virginia middle schools, a notable change from a decade ago when it was a 5-star school in the top 10% statewide; since the pandemic-era data gap, Liberty has been stable but consistently mid-tier. About 37.8% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch—roughly double the rate at nearby Franklin Middle and Rocky Run Middle, but far lower than schools just across the district line in Manassas City and Prince William County.

Liberty's clearest strength is advanced mathematics: proficiency is 100% in 7th-grade Algebra I and 8th-grade Geometry, and 97.6% in 8th-grade Algebra I, all above state averages. Standard 8th-grade math proficiency (52.4%) is dramatically higher than the district average of 33.1%. Reading and science are solid, close to district levels and above state averages. The comparison with Rocky Run Middle is instructive: Rocky Run, a 5-star school about five miles away, outperforms Liberty in reading and science despite spending less per student and having larger classes. Yet Liberty clearly outperforms Stone Middle, which has similar poverty rates and spending but ranks far lower in nearly every subject.

Liberty's biggest challenge is a significant achievement gap among student subgroups: while some groups perform well above the state median, others rank in the bottom third of their peers statewide. The school does notably well for military-connected students, who rank 4th of 130 schools statewide, and for disabled students. Chronic absenteeism (14.1%) runs above the district average of 11.9% and has fluctuated in recent years, making attendance a metric worth watching. Liberty also spends more per student ($14,282) than most comparable FCPS middle schools and maintains a low student–teacher ratio of 11.6, giving it resources many nearby schools lack.
