Summary

Parkside Middle is a large public middle school in Manassas, Virginia, serving 1,352 students in grades 6-8 as part of Prince William County Public Schools. The school has a very high poverty rate, with roughly 69% of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, which is significantly higher than nearby schools like Gainesville Middle and E.H. Marsteller Middle, where only about 24% qualify. Despite this, Parkside has earned a 2-star rating and ranks in the 33rd percentile of Virginia middle schools, showing a modest improvement from its 1-star status in previous years.

The most revealing comparison is with Unity Braxton Middle, which is just 2.6 miles away and serves an almost identical student population, with 69.2% low-income students. Yet Parkside outperforms Unity Braxton by 10 to 20 percentage points in nearly every subject, ranking 91 places higher in the state. Parkside's advanced math program is a clear strength, with 100% proficiency in 7th grade Algebra I and 96.4% in 8th grade Algebra I. Chronic absenteeism has also dropped sharply to 13.0%, below both the district and state averages.

However, Parkside still faces significant challenges. Reading scores lag the state by about 5 to 7 points in every grade, and on-grade math proficiency is below average, even as advanced math students excel. There are also notable gaps for certain groups, such as female students and low-income students, who rank lower than their peers statewide. Additionally, Parkside spends less per student than every comparable nearby school, including $9,462 compared to over $12,000 at Unity Braxton. Overall, Parkside is not a high-performing school by state standards, but it is clearly outperforming its closest demographic peers and moving in the right direction, making it a reasonable choice for families in the Manassas area.

Open Quote I was a student at Parkside 40 years ago. It's was a terrible school then and it looks like the prevailing attitude of apathy is still alive and well, more's the pity. Close Quote

Open Quote I have had a poor experience here at Parkside Middle School. The curriculum is low quality and is boring from what I have heard. The school is poorly organized and people are too busy to help the students. I would not recommend this school. Close Quote

Open Quote Very bad school, the staff is highly unorganized and has no idea what their doing, they hate their jobs and are unhappy. Some don't even know what their job is. I've been yelled at and hung up on by the staff, they all hate eachother and its a shame that the incredible principal has to manage this sorry excuse for a staff. She is so embarresed im really sorry for her. Its hard to do anything you have to get security checks and passes and verifications im not a terrorist i just need to leave class to go to the bathroom/talk to the counselor. The teachers are OK some are good. It's boring and every day its just school schooll not very hands-on or fun. The staff takes forever it took my 5 days sraight to register and they weren't helpful.
