Northwest Middle

Northwest Middle is a public school serving 542 students in grades 7–8 in Salt Lake City as part of the Salt Lake District. The school faces significant academic challenges: it ranked 213th out of 217 Utah schools in 2025–26, placing it in the 2nd statewide percentile. Proficiency rates were 20.3% in English language arts, 18.9% in math, and 24.6% in science across grades 7 and 8—well below district and state averages.

Math is the most urgent academic concern, especially in grade 8, where 15.8% of students were proficient compared with 39.3% statewide. Grade 8 ELA was also low at 18.5%, while science was the school’s strongest tested subject. There are encouraging signs of progress: grade 7 math proficiency rose from 15.6% to 21.9% in one year, and both grades improved in ELA compared with 2023–24. Chronic absenteeism also declined from 36.1% in 2021–22 to 29.5% in 2024–25, although that remains above Utah’s 23.8% rate. The school’s student-teacher ratio was relatively favorable at 15.1, suggesting that staffing levels alone do not explain the results. English learner support stands out as a relative strength, with that subgroup’s effectiveness ranking reaching the 61st percentile in 2025–26.

Because 87.08% of students qualified for free or reduced-price lunch, comparisons should focus partly on schools serving similar levels of need. Glendale Middle, with a 97.20% rate, had broadly similar results but stronger grade 8 science performance. Salt Lake Center for Science Education Bryant was also comparable academically, though its chronic absenteeism rate was higher at 34.6%. By contrast, Clayton Middle ranked 6th statewide, but serves a substantially different student population and had much lower absenteeism. Overall, the key priorities at Northwest are accelerating math and grade 8 ELA gains, sustaining attendance improvements, and identifying whether the practices helping English learners can support other student groups.
