Summary

Pigeon Forge Junior High School serves 495 students in grades 7–9 in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, a mountain town in eastern Tennessee, and is part of Sevier County Schools. The school currently ranks in the 27th percentile statewide (433rd of 594 Tennessee middle/junior high schools) with a 1-star rating, placing it in the bottom third of the state. After peaking at the 58th percentile in 2020–21, the school has settled into the bottom tier in recent years, including a notable drop from the 40th percentile in 2024–25.

Academic proficiency at the school trails both the district and the state in nearly every core subject. On the most recent TNReady assessments, 29.3% of students scored proficient in math, compared to 41.6% for Sevier County Schools and 43.0% statewide. English language arts proficiency was 25.1% — about 15 points below the state average — and science proficiency was 29.0%, a gap of roughly 18 points. Among the four 7–9 junior highs in the district, Pigeon Forge ranks at the bottom. Seymour Junior High posts a math proficiency rate of 55.5%, nearly double Pigeon Forge's, while Gatlinburg Pittman Junior High outperforms it by about 20 points in math and 14 points in science — a sign that stronger results are achievable within the same district.

Attendance is also a concern: 23.3% of students are chronically absent, matching the district average but about 5 points above the statewide rate of 18.3%. The school has improved from a high of 32.1% in 2021–22, and there are bright spots to build on. Algebra I and English I scores improved year over year, and the small group of students taking Geometry posted a 71.4% proficiency rate. At the same time, the feeder school, Pigeon Forge Intermediate School, outperforms the junior high in math, ELA, and science and has a much lower chronic absenteeism rate of 16.8%, suggesting the transition into junior high deserves attention. Focusing on core-subject instruction, attendance, and support for the students who are struggling most would give the school the clearest path forward.
