Summary

New London Middle School is a 204-student school serving grades 6–8 in the small rural community of New London, Ohio, in Huron County, and it is the only middle school in New London Local. In 2025–26 it ranked 577th of 1,046 Ohio middle schools (45th percentile, 2 stars), matching its district’s 44th-percentile standing. The longer trend shows real improvement from the 38th percentile in 2015–16 to a peak of 55th percentile (3 stars) in 2020–21, followed by a plateau in the mid-40s over the last four years. 98.5% are economically disadvantaged.

Two operational changes stand out. Chronic absenteeism fell from 18.6% in 2024–25 to 10.7% in 2025–26, now below the district’s 12.4% and third-lowest among eleven nearby schools—behind only Crestview Middle School (7.7%) and South Central Junior High School (10.1%), and ahead of Ashland Middle School (14.7%), Mapleton Middle School (16.1%), Black River Education Center Middle School (17.0%), and Norwalk Middle School (26.8%). The student-teacher ratio also dropped sharply, from 23.3 in 2022–23 to 12.7 in 2024–25—among the best locally, alongside Black River Education Center Middle School (10.9) and Norwalk Middle School (11.8), and better than Western Reserve Middle School (21.4) and League Elementary School (19.2). Spending is mid-pack at $9,240 per student.

Academically, the clear strength is grade 8: the school posted 57.6% proficiency in math (state: 52%) and 67.2% in science (state: 61.2%). Eighth-grade math beat Crestview Middle School (42.9) and was essentially level with Norwalk Middle School (57.9), though it trails Western Reserve Middle School (80.4), Ashland Middle School (74.6), and Black River Education Center Middle School (74.6). The sharpest weakness is grade 6, which scored 38.6% in math and 39.7% in ELA—below the state’s 56.2% and 56%, and lower than every comparison school with a sixth grade. Sixth-grade performance has also worsened over four years in both subjects. Bottom line: this is a small, high-poverty school performing near the state average but below most immediate neighbors, with real strengths in grade 8 math and science, much improved attendance, and a smaller student-teacher ratio—but a sixth grade that is the region’s weakest and trending the wrong way.
