Summary

Pittsfield Elementary School is a small school serving about 215 students in prekindergarten through grade 5 in the central New Hampshire community of Pittsfield and the Pittsfield School District. The school ranks 213th out of 230 New Hampshire schools, placing it in the 7th percentile, and its district ranks in the 10th percentile statewide. Pittsfield’s 2025–2026 proficiency rates were 24% in math, 35% in reading, and 26% in science, all below New Hampshire averages of 44%, 55%, and 38%, respectively.

The largest academic concern is math, especially in grades 3 and 4. Only 17% of third graders and 12% of fourth graders met proficiency standards, compared with 35% in grade 5. Reading remains below average, but it has improved steadily from 24% proficiency in 2022–2023 to 35% currently. Science has been less consistent, falling from 42% proficiency in 2022–2023 to 26% in 2025–2026. Pittsfield also serves a higher-need student population than most nearby schools: 55.81% of students qualified for free or reduced-price lunch in 2024–2025. Its student-to-teacher ratio, however, is not unusually high, suggesting that class size alone does not explain the results.

Compared with nearby schools, Pittsfield is in the bottom tier academically. Gilmanton Elementary School ranks in the 84th percentile, while Northwood Elementary School ranks in the 68th percentile; both also report substantially stronger math and reading results. Chichester Central School, Epsom Central School, and Loudon Elementary School also generally outperform Pittsfield. Only Barnstead Elementary School currently posts weaker overall results. The clearest improvement priorities are strengthening grades 3–4 math, maintaining reading progress, and investigating the recent science decline.
