Summary

Barnstead Elementary School is a public elementary school serving grades PK-8 in Center Barnstead, New Hampshire, with 483 students. The school is part of the Barnstead School District, which is ranked 150 out of 158 districts in the state and has a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Barnstead Elementary School consistently performs below the state average in proficiency rates for Math, Reading, and Science on the NH SAS assessments. For example, in the 2024-2025 school year, the school's overall proficiency rate in Math was 16% compared to the state average of 42%, and in Reading it was 31% compared to the state's 55%. The school also struggles to serve its student subgroups effectively, ranking in the bottom quarter of NH elementary schools for Female, Male, and White student performance, and in the bottom 1% for Special Education students. As a result, Barnstead Elementary has been ranked in the bottom quarter of NH elementary schools for the past several years and has consistently received a 0 or 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Despite its proximity to several higher-performing elementary schools, such as Northwood Elementary, Chichester Central, and New Durham Elementary, Barnstead Elementary does not appear to be benefiting from any positive spillover effects. The school's high rates of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 22.57% to 27.51% over the past few years, may be contributing to its academic challenges, but the nearby schools also serve economically disadvantaged populations, suggesting that Barnstead may face additional barriers beyond just socioeconomic status.

Open Quote Awful school. Most teachers only stay for a year or two before quitting, so I can imagine they're not treated well. The teachers that do stay are either bad at their jobs or condescending to students. One teacher even laughed at me when I made a small mistake in my work. Teachers have no control over students (as far as I'm aware this is only a problem in older grades). Students are disruptive and disrespectful and nothing is done to fix this problem. The cafeteria, gym and auditorium are all one room and the building is too small, to the point where a closet was used as a classroom last year. Close Quote

Open Quote This school needs new leadership and a fresh perspective on how to treat students. They do not allow for students' individuality and the disrespect toward students who struggle begins with the principal. Close Quote
