Northwood Elementary School is a public school serving about 413 students in prekindergarten through grade 8 in the town of Northwood, New Hampshire, a largely rural community in the southeastern part of the state. The school is part of the Northwood School District and has a stronger school-level standing than the district’s overall ranking might suggest. For 2025–26, Northwood ranked 73rd of 230 New Hampshire schools, placing it in the 68th percentile statewide.

Northwood’s academic results are generally solid. Across tested grades, 48% of students were proficient in math and 43% in science, both above state averages. Reading proficiency was 53%, slightly below the state’s 55%. The school’s strongest results were in grades 5 and 6, including 56% proficiency in math in both grades, 66% reading proficiency in grade 5, and 50% proficiency in fifth-grade science. Science also improved notably from the previous year. Northwood’s statewide ranking rose substantially from 119th in 2024–25 to 73rd in 2025–26, although scores have varied over time.

The clearest challenge is the drop in math and reading performance in grades 7 and 8. Math proficiency fell to 37% in grade 7 and 32% in grade 8, while reading fell to 44% and 40%, respectively. The school may benefit from focusing on middle-grade instruction, student support, and the transition from elementary to middle school. Northwood ranks ahead of many nearby schools, including Barnstead Elementary School, Epsom Central School, and Strafford School. However, Mast Way School and Nottingham Elementary School perform better overall, while Deerfield Community School posts stronger proficiency in all three reported subjects. Special education results also warrant close attention because that subgroup ranked well below the school overall.

Poor leadership, poor staff support, poor discipline, poor accountability. There are some wonderful teachers at this school, but their efforts are not supported. As with other towns, financial problems are huge and losing teachers and support staff have done a number on staff morale (or so it seems from a parent's perspective). The town doesn't want to give any more money to taxes (who does?) yet those who are determined not to raise the taxes have already gotten their kids through the school and are now voting down everything the school needs. No more music? No more art? Foreign language is a JOKE in this school. Only certain kids can take foreign language. The high school in this town is supposedly top notch so you'd think the elementary school would be too. That logic doesn't work with Northwood Elementary School. The kids deserve better than what they are getting. Close Quote
