Monadnock Regional Middle School

Monadnock Regional Middle School is a small public school in Swanzey, a southwestern New Hampshire community, serving 249 students in grades 7–8 as part of the Monadnock Regional School District. Its 14.2:1 student-teacher ratio is higher than at several nearby schools, including Keene Middle School, South Meadow School, and Walpole Elementary School.

Academically, the school is currently in the lower tier statewide. In 2025–26, 34% of students were proficient in math, 36% in reading, and 17% in science, compared with 44%, 55%, and 38% statewide. The school’s results also trailed most nearby comparisons. However, eighth-grade performance remains a major challenge: proficiency is 27% in math and 28% in reading, compared with 41% and 44% in seventh grade. Families may want to ask about eighth-grade instruction, intervention, attendance, and preparation for higher-level coursework. The school’s special education subgroup has ranked better comparatively than the overall student population, which may point to support practices worth extending more broadly.
