Hinsdale Middle High School

Hinsdale Middle High School is a small public school serving 121 students in grades 6–8 in the rural southwestern New Hampshire community of Hinsdale. The school is part of the Hinsdale School District and has a 13.4-to-1 student-teacher ratio. About 43% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, a higher share than at nearby comparison schools. Its small size may support close relationships, but it can also limit access to specialized staff, programs, and intervention options.

Academic results are currently a significant concern. In 2025–26, only 13% of students were proficient in mathematics, compared with 44% statewide, while 25% were proficient in reading, compared with 55% statewide. Reading results declined by grade, from 33% in grade 6 to 17% in grade 8; mathematics proficiency was also low in both reported grades. The school ranked 136th out of 138 New Hampshire middle schools, placing it in the state’s 1st percentile, while the Hinsdale School District ranked 160th of 166 districts. Science performance was 24% proficient in 2024–25, below the statewide rate of 38%.

Hinsdale’s results are considerably lower than those of nearby schools. At Keene Middle School, 42% of students were proficient in mathematics and 57% in reading; Monadnock Regional Middle School reported 34% mathematics and 36% reading proficiency. Keene also ranked 59th statewide, while Monadnock ranked 113th. Hinsdale’s rankings have declined sharply from the 30th percentile in 2018–19 to the 1st percentile currently, suggesting a broad, multi-year challenge rather than a single weak subject or grade. The most pressing priorities appear to be foundational mathematics, reading growth through grade 8, and targeted support for students who are below proficiency.
