Vance County High School in Henderson, NC, is a large public high school serving about 1,064 students in grades 9–12 as part of the Vance County Schools district. The school serves a very high-need population, with roughly 99.7% of students qualifying for free/reduced-price lunch. For 2025–26 it ranks 636th out of 662 North Carolina high schools, placing it in the 4th percentile with a 0-star rating, and its performance has generally worsened or remained flat over the past five years.

Academic proficiency at Vance County High School is dramatically below district and state averages. Just 9% of students scored proficient in Math I, compared to 42.1% statewide, and proficiency rates in Biology (19.2%) and English II (21.8%) are similarly far behind. Chronic absenteeism is the most urgent concern: 86.9% of students were chronically absent in the most recent year, compared to 24.2% statewide and 52.8% across the district. The student-teacher ratio also rose sharply to 22.9, higher than most nearby schools.
