Summary:

Zip code 27565 in Oxford, NC is served by six schools enrolling roughly 2,740 students, from pre-kindergarten through grade 12. The group includes two elementary schools (C. G. Credle Elementary and West Oxford Elementary), one middle school (Northern Granville Middle), one high school (J. F. Webb High), plus two alternative schools (Oxford Preparatory and Phoenix Academy). Five of the six belong to Granville County Schools, while Oxford Preparatory operates under its own district, Oxford Preparatory School. The most striking feature is the divide between Oxford Preparatory and the traditional public schools, which generally struggle on state tests.

Oxford Preparatory is the clear academic standout. Its graduation rate was 94.4% versus the state's 88.8%, chronic absenteeism was just 7.9%, and 2025-26 EOC proficiency rates were exceptional: 98.5% in Biology, 93.9% in English II, and 100% in Math III. The traditional Granville County Schools tell a very different story. J. F. Webb High posted a 79.8% graduation rate, 70.3% chronic absenteeism, and EOC proficiency roughly 17 to 39 points below state averages, with its state ranking sliding from the 25th to the 10th percentile in two years. Phoenix Academy, with only 17 students, had single-digit test proficiency and 88.2% chronic absenteeism, making direct comparisons difficult but the struggles clear.

The elementary and middle schools sit in between. C. G. Credle Elementary and West Oxford Elementary serve student bodies where roughly 97-99% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch; both posted third-grade math near the state average, but reading proficiency fell far short of state norms. At Northern Granville Middle, proficiency rates lingered in the 26-37% range against state averages of 53-59%, and the school has remained near the 8th-9th percentile for three straight years. Poverty and absenteeism track closely with these results, and secondary rankings are declining rather than improving. Oxford Preparatory's success proves high achievement is possible in zip code 27565, raising real equity questions about the opportunities available to families across these two very different school systems.
