Vance County Middle School

Vance County Middle School is a large school in Henderson, NC, serving 755 students in grades 6–8 as part of Vance County Schools, a district that ranks near the bottom of North Carolina districts. Nearly all of its students (99.5%) come from low-income households, and the school has ranked in the bottom 3–10% of the state’s middle schools for the past decade, with a 0-star rating in recent years.

Academically, proficiency rates are persistently low across all grades and subjects. In the latest school year, math proficiency ranged from 16.5% in 6th grade to 26.5% in 8th grade, while reading proficiency ranged from 18.1% to 30.7%. The school’s overall proficiency of roughly 30% is well below the state average of about 60%. Perhaps the most telling comparison is within the same district. STEM Early High, located just over two miles away, also serves grades 6–8 and has a nearly identical share of low-income students (98.9%), yet it ranks in the 73rd percentile statewide and posts math and reading proficiency rates around 61% and 67%, respectively—roughly triple those at Vance County Middle. This shows that poverty alone does not determine outcomes. Meanwhile, subgroup results at Vance County Middle show urgent concerns: special education students fell from the 70th percentile to the 0th percentile in one year, and English learner students dropped from the mid-40s to the 6th percentile. Given the stark contrast with STEM Early High, the challenges at Vance County Middle appear tied to school-specific factors such as attendance, programming, and school culture, not simply the demographics of its students.
