Summary

Vance Virtual Village Academy is a small school in Henderson, NC, serving 126 students in grades 6–12 as part of Vance County Schools, a district ranked in the 14th percentile statewide. The school's overall state ranking sits at 614th out of 662 tracked North Carolina schools — the 7th percentile — and it has remained in the lowest 5th–7th percentile band for the past four reported years. Outcomes for male students and those from low-income families are among the weakest in the state compared with peer schools.

The clearest academic pattern is a dramatic split between subjects. Reading and English are relative strengths: English II proficiency reached 53.3% in the most recent year — more than 20 points above the district average — and 7th and 8th grade reading also topped district averages. Math and science tell a very different story. Only 7.7% of 6th graders scored proficient in math, Math I proficiency was just 6.3%, and Biology came in at 10.0%. Attendance and graduation are major concerns as well. The chronic absenteeism rate is 62.5%, more than two and a half times the state rate of 24.2%, while the graduation rate has drifted down to 72.4% — below the district's 80.8% and the state's 88.8%.

For parents weighing options, the contrast with nearby schools is instructive. Roughly five miles away, Vance County Early College serves a similarly high share of economically disadvantaged students yet ranks in the 87th percentile, with Math I proficiency of 88.5% and a chronic absenteeism rate of just 9.6%. Vance Virtual Village Academy does outperform some local comprehensive high schools, including AdVance Academy and Vance County High School, especially in English. Still, with only about 126 students, year-to-year scores can swing widely, and the combination of very high absenteeism, a declining graduation rate, and deeply weak math and science results are important factors for families to weigh.
