Summary

Warren County Middle is a grades 6–8 public school in Warrenton, NC, serving about 342 students, nearly all of whom come from low-income households — one of the highest-poverty student populations in North Carolina. As part of Warren County Schools, the school currently ranks in the bottom 3% of North Carolina middle schools (757th out of 778) with a 0-star rating. Test scores on state EOG exams fall far below state averages across every grade and subject: 6th grade math proficiency is just 8.9% versus the state's 59.2%, 7th grade reading is 29.9% versus 56.3%, and even 8th grade science, the school's relative strength, comes in at 40.4% compared to the 68.6% state average.

What makes these results even more striking is the comparison with nearby STEM Early High in Henderson, NC, about 15 miles away. STEM Early High serves a nearly identical high-poverty student body, yet ranks in the 73rd percentile statewide with a 4-star rating, and outperforms Warren County Middle dramatically in every subject. Meanwhile, Vance County Middle School, despite a chronic absenteeism rate above 60%, posts academic results that are similar to or better than Warren County Middle in several areas.

Warren County Middle does have some positive conditions worth noting. Chronic absenteeism has improved from 50.8% to 38.0% over the past three years, and the school spends more per student ($13,208) than its nearby peers while maintaining smaller class sizes. Those strengths make the outcomes gap all the more frustrating. The key takeaway is that while poverty is a real challenge at this school, other high-poverty schools in the same region demonstrate that far stronger results are possible — suggesting that targeted instructional strategies in math and reading, especially in the earlier middle grades, deserve urgent attention.
