Summary

Jacksonville Commons Elementary is a public elementary school located in Jacksonville, North Carolina, serving 503 students in grades K-5. The school is part of the Onslow County Schools district, which is ranked 116 out of 242 school districts in the state.

Despite the school's relatively high per-student spending and student-teacher ratio, Jacksonville Commons Elementary has consistently ranked in the bottom half of North Carolina elementary schools, with a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger for the past several years. The school's academic performance, as measured by state standardized tests, is generally below the district and state averages, particularly in the area of Reading. For example, in the 2024-2025 school year, the percentage of 3rd-grade students proficient or better in Math was 65.1% at Jacksonville Commons, compared to 63.9% for Onslow County and 64.1% for North Carolina, while the school's 3rd-grade Reading proficiency rates ranged from 29% to 45.3%, compared to 46.1% to 50.5% for Onslow County and 46.5% to 48.7% for North Carolina.

The high percentage of students from low-income families at Jacksonville Commons Elementary, with over 70% qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, suggests that the school faces significant socioeconomic challenges that may impact student learning and achievement. Nearby schools, such as Parkwood Elementary, have lower percentages of low-income students and tend to have higher academic performance. This suggests that simply allocating more resources may not be the sole solution, and that other factors, such as instructional practices, school leadership, and community engagement, may play a significant role in improving student outcomes at Jacksonville Commons Elementary.

Open Quote The teachers seem to be great actually. However the schools policies, which very well may be county wide, are aggrivating to say the least. Not to mention there is a fund raiser or TWO every week. Yes a NEW fundrasier every week that offer kids garbage prizes or special parties to rake people for money. Close Quote
