Summary

West Oxford Elementary in Oxford, NC, serves roughly 520 students in grades PK–5 and is the largest elementary school in the Granville County Schools district comparison group. The school serves a highly impoverished student body — more than 97% of students qualified for free/reduced lunch in 2024-2025. Its statewide ranking has historically hovered near the bottom, but 2025-2026 results showed improvement to the 19th percentile, the school's best showing in over a decade. Even so, West Oxford Elementary remains the lowest-ranked elementary school among its same-district peers.

Reading is the school's biggest academic challenge, with 2025-2026 EOG proficiency rates of 30.9% in 3rd grade, 42.3% in 4th grade, and 32.1% in 5th grade — all far below district and state averages. Math tells a different story: 3rd graders posted a strong 67.9% proficiency rate, slightly above the state average, but that strength fades sharply in 4th grade (50.7%) and 5th grade (46.4%). Chronic absenteeism is also a serious concern, with 42.3% of students chronically absent in 2024-2025 — nearly double the state rate and the highest among Granville County elementary schools, well above C.G. Credle Elementary (31.1%), Tar River Elementary (23.3%), and Wilton Elementary (20.2%).

Encouragingly, several subgroups showed meaningful improvement in 2025-2026: African American and English Language Learner students now rank near the statewide median for their subgroups, and low-income student rankings improved from the 18th to the 34th percentile. The comparison with nearby schools also shows that better outcomes are achievable in the same district context. Stovall-Shaw Elementary, Wilton, and Tar River all serve similarly high-poverty populations yet outperform West Oxford by substantial margins. Progress for this school will likely depend on reducing chronic absenteeism and building a stronger, more consistent literacy strategy across every grade level.
