Summary

C. G. Credle Elementary is a pre-K–5 school in Oxford, NC, serving about 327 students in Granville County Schools, where nearly every student (99.1%) comes from a low-income household. The school currently ranks at the 28th percentile statewide — below the North Carolina median but above most of its local peers. Among nearby elementary schools, only Wilton Elementary and Tar River Elementary rank higher; West Oxford Elementary, Stovall-Shaw Elementary, and the elementary schools in Vance County Schools all rank below Credle.

The most encouraging news is in the early grades. Credle’s third-grade math proficiency was 70.2% in 2025–26, well above the district rate of 57.6% and above the state average. Third-grade reading also reached 51.1%, beating the district’s 42.6% and coming within a few points of the state. The school’s overall momentum is positive, too: Credle has risen from the 13th percentile in 2021–22 to the 28th percentile today. Even its subgroup results look stronger than the overall rank suggests, with low-income students performing at the 47th percentile statewide.

The main concern is that these early gains seem to fade by upper elementary. Fifth-grade reading proficiency is just 28.8%, more than 26 points below the state average, and fifth-grade science (44.2%) is the lowest among the Granville County elementary schools in this comparison group. Chronic absenteeism (31.1%) is better than the county average but still above the state, and the student-teacher ratio rose sharply to 17.7, which could make closing those fifth-grade gaps harder. For parents, the picture is mixed: Credle is doing something right in grades K–3, but sustaining that progress through fifth grade is the key challenge ahead.

The teachers and the principal are not consistent and the children are not having fun at all. The music program was cut and now they only have art. Music is condusive to learning and art is not. The music teacher put on a production of K-3 last year that had these children singing and dancing in sync, all of them smiling and having a great time together. There was probably 100+ students involved, yet the music teacher was told she could not teach.
I purchased extra supplies for my son's class but I have went in twice only to find my son has pencils that are not sharp, have teeth marks, no erasers, and he is not allowed to even ask to get up and sharpen his pencil. The teacher takes up the pencils daily and puts them back out in the mornings yet she does not take the time to actually inspect them.
I know my son is not perfect but I also know he hates going to school because he does not get any positive words or encouragement he only gets berated and yelled at.
I am disappointed in my experience with the public education sytem and I am looking for a private school that will work with my child not against him. Close Quote

I am a step parent of an upcoming 3rd grader. I took notice to him reading Ramen noodle cooking instructions. I asked for him to come sit at the computer to do a reading assessment test and he scored low first grade. Three and four letter words he struggled. Please take heart in all our students. In my opinion I feel as though he was passed to suffice your overall school rating. Close Quote
