Charlotte Lab School

Charlotte Lab School is a K–12 public charter school in Charlotte, NC, serving 807 students and operating as its own independent school district. While the school graduated 94.7% of its 2024–25 seniors—well above the state's 87.7% figure—state assessment results tell a very different story. Charlotte Lab consistently scores below North Carolina averages across most subjects and grade levels. In 2025–26, only 40% of 3rd graders were proficient in math, versus 66.4% statewide, and just 31.3% of 8th graders were proficient in math. High school End-of-Course exams show even wider gaps: Math III proficiency was 18.5% versus 68.9% statewide, and English II slipped from above the state average in 2022–23 to below the state average in each of the last two years.

Attendance is a major concern. The student body is also changing: the share of students qualifying for free/reduced lunch jumped from 33.7% in 2022–23 to 50.1% in 2024–25, while nearby charters like Mountain Island Charter School report 27.4%. The school does have a low student-teacher ratio of 12.4—smaller than most comparable area charters—but with roughly one in three students missing a month or more of instruction, that staffing advantage hasn't translated into strong outcomes.

The most striking inconsistency is the gap between graduation and mastery. A 94.7% graduation rate coexists with high-school math proficiency near 18–33%, raising questions about course rigor and grading standards. That said, there is evidence of potential: in 2023–24, Charlotte Lab's 8th-grade class outperformed the state in both math and science, and 7th-grade reading was above the state average that same year. The school is capable of strong results, but they've been inconsistent. With rising absenteeism, a doubling of economic disadvantage in just two years, and proficiency gaps that are widening rather than shrinking, Charlotte Lab appears to be at a crossroads—students are earning diplomas, but state assessments suggest many may not be leaving with the academic foundations those diplomas typically represent.
