Summary:

Madison County Schools is a large Mississippi district serving roughly 12,879 students across 20 campuses — 11 elementary schools, 4 middle schools, 4 high schools, and 1 alternative school — spanning the communities of Madison, Ridgeland, Flora, Canton, and Camden. The district as a whole ranks 20th out of 134 Mississippi districts with a 4-star rating, placing it in the 85th percentile statewide, but that overall rating masks dramatic differences between its highest- and lowest-performing schools.

The district's crown jewels are clustered in the Madison area. Madison Middle School is the #1 middle school in Mississippi for three consecutive years, posting 100% proficiency in Algebra I and Biology EOC exams. Madison Central High School ranks #4 among all Mississippi high schools with a 94% graduation rate, while Madison Station Elementary (#6), Madison Avenue Upper (#7), and Mannsdale Upper Elementary (#15) are all among the state's elite elementary campuses. Just behind them, Germantown Middle (#7) and Germantown High School (#48) offer strong alternatives with a 97.3% graduation rate — the highest in the district. Meanwhile, Ridgeland High School (#140) and Velma Jackson High School (#173) rank in the bottom half of state high schools.

Two patterns stand out for parents. First, chronic absenteeism above 40% affects every comprehensive high school in the district, including high-performing Madison Central (42.3%), suggesting a systemic secondary attendance challenge. Second, poverty closely tracks performance: the top Madison-area schools serve mostly 11–25% free/reduced lunch populations, while lower-ranked schools like Luther Branson Elementary (95.4% FRL) and Shirley D. Simmons Middle School (94.4% FRL) face far greater economic hurdles. Still, Luther Branson ranks #57 in the state — proof that high-poverty schools can outperform expectations. Also notable: Rosa Scott, the district's alternative school, posts 90.4% Algebra I proficiency, another positive outlier worth watching.
