Velma Jackson High School

Velma Jackson High School is a small, rural public high school in Camden, Mississippi, serving about 224 students in grades 9–12 as part of the high-performing Madison County Schools district, which ranks in the top 15% of Mississippi districts. The school serves a predominantly economically disadvantaged student body—about 90.6% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch—yet it enjoys a remarkably low student-teacher ratio of 6.8 to 1, one of the most favorable in the region.

Despite these staffing advantages, Velma Jackson has struggled academically in recent years, falling from the 57th percentile in state rankings in 2021–2022 to the 23rd percentile in 2025–2026. Chronic absenteeism is a major concern, with 41.6% of students chronically absent in 2023–2024—more than double the district rate of 20.4% and nearly double the state average. The graduation rate has also declined sharply, dropping from 92.4% in 2022–2023 to 83.3% in 2024–2025, now about 8 points below the district rate. The comparison to McAdams Attendance Center is especially telling: both schools serve similarly high-poverty student populations and have nearly identical student-teacher ratios, yet McAdams outperforms Velma Jackson on most end-of-course tests and posts a higher graduation rate (90.3% vs. 83.3%). Velma Jackson's Algebra I results have shown real promise in past years—reaching 70.1% proficiency in 2022–2023, above the state average—suggesting pockets of instructional strength to build on. However, the most urgent priorities should be reducing chronic absenteeism and strengthening literacy and English proficiency, as those are the areas where the school lags farthest behind both its district and the state.
