Summary:

Liberal has eight public schools—five elementary, two middle and one high school—offering families options from elementary through high school. The broadest concern is that average proficiency is below the Kansas average in every subject: Liberal schools average 27% in English language arts (ELA), 19% in math and 19% in science, compared with 46%, 41% and 38% statewide. Math has the largest average gap, at 22 percentage points; even the strongest local result in each subject falls short of the state. That statewide gap is the most important finding for families weighing local results.

Among elementary schools, Sunflower Elementary School leads in ELA and math, at 40% and 27%, while Cottonwood Elementary School leads in science, at 32%. MacArthur Elementary School is another math bright spot at 26%, but its science score is 17%. Among the middle schools, Eisenhower Middle School is ahead of Seymour Rogers Middle School in all three subjects: 27% versus 14% in ELA, 23% versus 13% in math, and 18% versus 11% in science. Seymour Rogers has the lowest reported all-grades score in each subject across the eight schools.

Average results improved from 2024–25 to 2025–26 by about 3 percentage points in ELA and math and 2 points in science; the average gap with the state narrowed in all three subjects. Gains were not universal: MacArthur declined in all three subjects, and Prairie View Elementary School’s science score fell by 5 points. SchoolDigger’s statewide rank percentiles rose for six schools and fell for Prairie View and MacArthur; Prairie View dropped 9 points, while Meadowlark Elementary School rose 2. Measures such as student–teacher ratio do not map neatly to scores: Sunflower has the highest ratio, 23.2, yet leads elementary ELA and math. Free/reduced-lunch rates range from 80% at MacArthur to 98% at Meadowlark; these figures are context, not explanations for results. Because schools serve different grade spans, comparisons within the same school level are most useful.
