Summary:

Joint School District No. 2 serves the Meridian, Eagle, Star, and west Boise areas of Idaho with 61 schools — 35 elementary, 11 middle, 14 high, and 1 alternative school — enrolling roughly 38,740 students in grades PK–12. The district ranks 12th out of 101 Idaho districts with a 4-star rating, and its students outperform state averages in nearly every subject, but those district-level numbers hide wide variation, with schools ranging from top-10 statewide performers to schools in the bottom 20%.

Specialty schools dominate the top of the rankings. Renaissance High School is the state's #1 high school with 87.3% math proficiency, followed in the top 10 by Idaho Fine Arts Academy, Meridian Technical Charter High School, and Meridian Medical Arts Charter. Among traditional high schools, Eagle High School is the strongest at #11. At the middle school level, Heritage Middle School, Victory Middle School, and Eagle Middle School all rank in the top 16 statewide. Top elementary schools include Eagle Hills Elementary School (#3), Galileo Stem Academy (#5), and Paramount Elementary School (#8).

Two patterns stand out for parents. First, poverty and attendance are strongly tied to performance: Meridian High School, with 32.2% free/reduced lunch and 19% chronic absenteeism, ranks just #63, while Meridian Elementary School (66% poverty) scores 37.2% in math. Encouragingly, Summerwind Stem Academy (40.8% poverty) and Lowell Scott Middle School (35.2% poverty) prove high-poverty schools can excel. Second, middle school is the district's biggest opportunity: high performers like Heritage Middle School (66% math) sit alongside Pathways Middle School (19.8% math) and Crossroads Middle School (28.6% math). Notably, higher spending does not guarantee results — Central Academy High School spends $10,731 per student yet posts very low scores, while top performers like Hillsdale Elementary spend about $6,115. For parents, the clearest takeaway is that school choice within this district matters enormously, and chronic absenteeism above 20% is a red flag worth investigating.
