Summary

Eliza Hart Spalding Stem Academy is a STEM-focused elementary school in Boise, ID, serving 610 students in grades PK–5 as part of Joint School District No. 2. The school currently ranks 49th out of 346 Idaho elementary schools (86th percentile, 4 stars), placing it comfortably in the top 15% of schools statewide. Its ranking has climbed steadily over the past decade, from mid-60s percentiles in 2015–2018 to the 80s–90s percentiles in recent years.

As a STEM academy, Spalding's strongest academic areas reflect that focus. Math proficiency is 65.3%, well above the district's 57.6% and the state's 43.1%. Fifth-grade science proficiency is 60.8%, also above district (57.7%) and state (44.0%) averages. ELA proficiency is 67.5% — above the state's 54.0% but slightly below the district's 69.1%. Attendance is another standout: chronic absenteeism is just 6.1%, far below the district's 12.7% and the state's 13.8%, and it has improved dramatically from 22.0% just a few years ago. Spalding also earned 5-star ratings for both female (94th percentile) and male (96th percentile) students in 2023–2024.

Spalding produces these results efficiently, spending $6,780 per student — well below schools like Frontier Elementary School at $10,116 and Chief Joseph School Of The Arts at $7,649. Hillsdale Elementary outperforms Spalding in math and ELA, but serves a more affluent population. One watch area: math proficiency drops from 73.2% in 3rd grade to 57.8% in 5th grade, falling slightly below the district average by 5th grade. Even so, Spalding is one of the strongest, most consistent elementary schools in the area, delivering well-above-state results at a relatively low per-student cost.

Open Quote This school is not the great school it use to be. My kids have been at this school for five years and when Mr. Johnstone was principal here I had one issue involving bullying and it was addressed. Since our new principal has started I have had multiple issues and she does not care to listen. I feel as a parent that my opinions do not matter here. She makes me feel like I am always wrong for questioning her methods. I do not agree with segregating the 4th and 5th graders or in assigning basketball courts to specific grades. I believe that is a quick fix instead of a long term solution. What makes me uneasy though is that a principal is suppose to be out of their office and walking about mingling and meeting parents and students, but it seems almost every day I am there to pick up my child from school she is sitting in her office. That is a very bad sign for a principal. There are still some great teachers here but there has been so many changes of staff here in the last yr. All 5th grade teachers are brand new. The good ones are leaving. The principal is what makes a school and I feel this principal is lacking the skills needed. If you are looking for a school for your child I suggest looking into a better school. Close Quote
