Summary

Shoal Creek Elementary School in Conyers, GA, serves 666 students in grades PK–5 within the Rockdale County School District, a community where 100% of students now qualify for free or reduced lunch.

Shoal Creek currently holds a 1-star rating, ranking in the 12th percentile of Georgia elementary schools—a significant drop from its 52nd percentile ranking a decade ago. The most dramatic decline occurred recently, coinciding with a rapid increase in economic need among families. While the school faces real challenges, there are bright spots. Chronic absenteeism has improved steadily from 34.4% to 26.7% over four years, a better rate than several nearby schools like Honey Creek Elementary (29.9%) and Hicks Elementary (30.3%). In math, 4th graders posted a 32.4% proficiency rate, nearly matching the district average, and 5th grade science has occasionally exceeded district performance. However, the school spends less per student ($14,977) than every comparable peer—about $3,800 less than Sims Elementary—and has a higher student-teacher ratio (15.4:1 vs. 11.2:1 at Sims), which may limit targeted support.

Two areas need particular attention. Special education students rank in the 8th percentile statewide, and there is a significant gender gap, with female students ranking 18 percentile points higher than males. For context, nearby Leadership Preparatory Academy in DeKalb County serves a similar demographic and ranks in the 42nd percentile, showing that economic disadvantage does not determine outcomes. While Stoneview Elementary nearby ranks last in the state, Shoal Creek's improving attendance and pockets of grade-level strength suggest a foundation to build on—if resource gaps are addressed.

Open Quote My child had a wonderful second grade year with Mrs. Nicole Smith. She is an exceptional teacher. I wish she could have moved up with my child. We will miss her. Close Quote

Open Quote The school lacks sound instructional leadership. The grading policy is inconsistent and needs work. The academic work is void of rigor. The AP has been there too long and is too close to staff members to reprimand them for lack of effective teaching. She definitely needs to be transferred. The school makes it optional for teachers to send homework. I see why this school is ranked in the bottom out of all the elementary schools in the county! They need good leaders who are not afraid to work the teachers and non renew their contracts if necessary! Close Quote

Open Quote Shoal Creek Elementary School is an amazing school where teachers and proffesionals truly care for our kids. I have 3 kids in the School and I am very pleased with the School. I had never had a problem with a bus leaving kids in the wrong place, in fact one time I addressed a little incident between my kid an another, and the school was right on top of it. Kids were called and they addressed it beautifully making it a learning experecience for the kids ( never had a nother problem again). Every time you visit the principal is involved in everything going on at the School. Teachers care for the children and stimulate them in their level. They will keep lines of communication open and you will be well informed of how your kid is doing. I have very smart kids, and they even have had meetings to find out how to make it even more challenging for one of my children. I was very impressed 14 people discussing every 2 or 3 months how he was doing and how they could make it even more challenging for him. - he loved the extra projects he had to do and learned so much from them- When a school takes that amount of time and effort to keep a child challenged you see they truly know the importance of education in their hearts and will stay commited to their tasks. The school encourages excellence in academics, good behavior and attendance. You can visit at any time and you see order everywhere. Media Specialists will motivate your children to read more and more to the point where your kids will love to read. Kids will enjoy Art, Music, PE and all the special classes as well. I think one of the keys for success in one child's life is the involvement of the mom and dad in their lives and education process. Everyone expects miracles from schools when the home is absent. There is no way our children will succeed if the parents are not there. I love Shoal Creek. The teachers love these children and work hard to make a positive impact in their lives. Close Quote

Open Quote This "school" is horrid. The emphasis is not on learning, but on fund-raising. Every week my child comes home with a flier about fund-raising, while her homework sheets are mysteriously absent. The principal is nothing but a pompous bureaucrat interested in nothing but covering his own hide. My neighbor's 5 year old daughter was dropped off at the wrong bus stop, and my neighbor informed me that no repercussions occurred and that this principal basically treated it like it's no big deal and that it's an everyday occurrence. If your child is in this school district, exercise your right to choose another school! Close Quote
