Summary

Sims Elementary School in Conyers, GA, serves approximately 462 students in grades PK-5 as part of the Rockdale County school district, where 100% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch.

Sims Elementary has experienced a significant decline in its statewide ranking over the past decade, falling from the 67th percentile in 2016-2017 to the 20th percentile in 2025-2026. The school currently holds a 1-star rating. One of the most pressing concerns is chronic absenteeism, which stands at 33.2% — nearly double the state average of 17.7% and notably higher than nearby Lorraine Elementary School at 22.4%. This rate has also jumped by nearly 7 percentage points in just one year. Despite these challenges, the school spends more per student ($18,771) than any other elementary school in the comparison group and maintains a favorable student-teacher ratio of 11.2:1, suggesting that resources alone are not driving outcomes.

Academically, Sims shows some relative strengths in mathematics. In 4th grade, 36.5% of students scored proficient in math, exceeding the district average of 33.8% and ranking second among nearby schools. However, 5th grade science proficiency is a significant weakness, with only 20.5% of students scoring proficient compared to the state average of 44.2% and 51.4% at nearby Honey Creek Elementary School. There is also a notable gender gap: female students rank in the 32nd percentile statewide, while male students rank in the 12th percentile. The school's rising poverty concentration — from 81% to 100% free/reduced lunch eligibility in just two years — along with the absenteeism crisis, are likely key factors behind the academic struggles. While the school outperforms Shoal Creek Elementary School and Peek's Chapel Elementary, it lags behind several other nearby schools, making chronic absenteeism the most critical area for improvement.

Open Quote This school is the worst I've experience. Teachers are never present but quick to give iss and suspension for minor incidents. They are failing these students and always going off hear say instead of being in the classrooms. I've raised 5 kids in Rockdale school system and since COVID, Rockdale staff has dropped the ball in a major way. Close Quote

Open Quote I love Sims & the Sims family!!! Even in a school with nearly 600 children, the faculty & staff know my son.....they know me. We are greeted with a friendly, happy smile each and every morning, most times by name. Dr. Gay & Mr. Braswell (Principal & Assistant Principal) are fantastic with the children, loving discipline. They too know the children. I have nothing but good to say about the school. It is evident the teachers love what they do and have great leadership. I am an involved parent, I support what my son's teacher is learning........I reinforce what he's learning. We attempt to attend as many organized after school activities we can, as well as the SAC meetings.

This is a great school, with great leadership, great faculty & great students! My son is thriving and growing into his own person more and more here.

Additionally, I love that the teachers recognize children that are more academically advanced & challenge them, to avoid boredome, without stressing them out. They are very attentive to those children who need additional help as well.

The school is extremely organized as well!

Love my Sims family! Close Quote
