Summary

Woodland Middle School in Stockbridge, GA, serves 679 students in grades 6-8 within the Henry County School District, where about 63.5% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. The school has held a steady mid-tier ranking over the past five years, currently sitting in the 34th percentile statewide—a slight dip from its 40th percentile in 2023-2024 but consistent with its recent average. While overall math proficiency in standard grade-level courses trails state averages, the school shines in advanced coursework: 79.6% of students scored proficient or better in Algebra I, more than double the district average (35.1%) and well above the state (48.1%). Similarly, 75.8% of 8th graders passed HS Physical Science, beating both district and state benchmarks. Science and social studies scores also exceed district averages, with 8th-grade science proficiency jumping from 15.1% to 25% in one year.

One of the school's most compelling strengths is its remarkably low chronic absenteeism rate of 9.4%—less than half the district average (19.6%) and well below the state (17.7%). This marks a 45% reduction from 17.1% in 2021-2022, and it's particularly impressive when compared to nearby schools with similar demographics, such as Stockbridge Middle School (23.9% absenteeism) and Austin Road Middle School (16.6%). Woodland also outperforms Eagle's Landing Middle School (14th percentile) and Stockbridge Middle (10th percentile) overall, though it trails Union Grove Middle (74th percentile). Notably, Woodland's Algebra I proficiency actually exceeds that of Impact Academy Middle School (68%) and is competitive with higher-ranked schools like Austin Road (97.2%) and Union Grove (93.4%).

Woodland spends $15,677 per student—more than Union Grove ($11,745), Eagle's Landing ($12,835), and Stockbridge Middle ($13,612)—and maintains a favorable student-teacher ratio of 17.2:1. The school also demonstrates strong outcomes for its African American students, who rank in the 56th percentile statewide (3 stars), significantly higher than the school's overall ranking. While special education students rank lower (25th percentile), the school's consistent improvement in attendance and exceptional advanced course performance suggest a solid foundation. The challenge ahead is translating these strengths into broader gains across standard coursework, but for families seeking a school with strong accelerated programs and a clear commitment to getting kids to school, Woodland offers a stable, resource-rich environment.

Open Quote The teachers have poor attendance. My son has had a substitute teach in one of his classes for more than half the year. There are fights all the time in school and on the bus. My son has been bullied and has had multiple physical hits at school from bullies and adults are nowhere to be found. We have decided to leave woodland middle and start homeschooling. He will receive a better education because Henry county is a joke. Close Quote
